Our Plan of Action 1. Safety communication and promotion Easy access to shared up-to-date information is a critical part of reducing the risks faced by operators in the forest. Providing an easily accessed safety website and incident reporting system will provide support and information to members. It will also allow the industry to share good practice and provide additional training, advice and information. Action: Continue to provide essential safety information on the website.

Better accident statistics Measuring success in improved safety is ultimately seen as a reduction in the numbers of injuries and incidents. With the support of HSE, we will set up a means of establishing and managing forest industry safety statistics to enable review of overall performance and to identify specific trends in accidents and incidents.

Action: Establish basis for industry safety statistics during Behavioural change management The Accord sees behavioural change at all levels as a key priority in improving safety performance. This is a mature state for any industry to achieve and is not arrived at though any easy or quick means. We wish to research and develop a longer term behavioural change Action Plan to encompass all of the sector.

Chainsaw refresher training It is now 20 years since certificated chainsaw operations were first introduced. Appropriate, relevant and up-to-date refresher training that is properly managed and monitored providing genuine accreditation of competency is an important requirement for those at greatest risk.

Action: Continue to develop and carry out suitable chainsaw refresher training. Timber haulage in the forest The transportation of timber to market is a critical part of the supply chain. As production increases, we need to ensure that forest owners are aware of the need for appropriate standards in roading and access.

This will promote safe operation in loading and timber movement in the forest. Action: Establish a set of forest haulage guidelines by October Working safely with electricity Electricity continues to feature strongly in very serious safety incidents. We need a common understanding of the key safety management issues when working close to electricity power lines.

We will work with distribution companies to create up-to-date guidelines for this working environment. FISA Guide has been published to provide industry guidance. Action: Generate further operational guidelines for forest operations and electricity during Competency of forest works managers and the site supervisors The demands on forest works managers and site supervisors have increased tremendously over recent years. Experience can be in short supply and those from an operational background are few and far between.

We need to ensure that the managers and site supervisors of the future are well grounded and have adequate experience and exposure to the demands of complex harvesting site operations. Key competencies need to be developed for managers and contractors alike. Action:Continue to provide FWM and site supervisor competency framework. Shopping Basket.
